AI x Biomimicry Competition + Course
Never Enough Architecture (NEA) is launching a new initiative that joins education and contests. The initiative combines traditional architecture competitions with free expert-led courses, giving participants a comprehensive understanding of the contests’ central topics.
For their first competition + course, NEA, in partnership with the Antonio Gaudí Foundation, invite participants to explore the potential of biomimicry and artificial intelligence in design, a forward-thinking intersection that promises to reshape architectural practices.
Since the dawn of time, humans have been inspired by nature, from our ancestors' cave dwellings to the bird-influenced designs of early flying machines, and this inspiration continues to shape today's architectural marvels, such as Gaudi’s ingenious use of nature's functional forms to solve structural issues and designs that mimic the ventilation system of sea sponges and corals. This longstanding practice of biomimicry in architecture signifies our unbroken connection with the natural world and marks a natural progression in our design evolution.
Besides that, we are currently on the cusp of another transformative era - the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), a revolutionary technology with the potential to reshape various domains, especially architecture, enriching it with increased efficiency, innovation, and sustainability.
This competition thus offers a unique exploration into the convergence of biomimicry and AI, inviting you to create a project that marries a robust biomimetic concept with AI software as a key component of the creative process, with the goal of crafting a future where architecture is not only aesthetically appealing but inherently sustainable.

Generative Futures: An AI + Architecture Storytelling Challenge
The term ‘artificial intelligence’ was first coined in 1956. Since then, individual AI systems have matched or outperformed humans in everything from chess and AlphaGo to marketing and navigation. In the past 12 months alone, the consequences of AI, and specifically ‘deep learning,’ on the AEC industry have been propelled to the top of human consciousness through the advent of text-to-image tools such as Midjourney, and outcome-based design software such as Spacemaker.
What does this mean for the future of architecture, architecture studios, architects, creativity, cities, and humanity?
“It’s difficult to make predictions, especially about the future,” said the Danish physicist Niels Bohr.
We cannot predict. But we can dream, forewarn, sculpt, and shape. We can capitalize on the opportunities of AI in the design process, the school studio, the construction site, and the built environment. At the same time, we can confront, question, and remedy the questions posed by AI in the field of architecture and the built environment, be it ethics, surveillance, ownership, representation, or the changing definitions of creativity itself.
“We are called to be architects of the future, not its victims,” said the American architect Buckminster Fuller.

Beyond Isolation: Senior Housing Competition
Introducing the Beyond Isolation: Senior Housing Competition, an architecture ideas competition focused on alleviating the isolation experienced by our aging population. As individuals grow older, they often face increased physical and social inactivity, leading to negative impacts on their physical and mental health. Furthermore, living alone or in isolation can exacerbate these issues, resulting in higher risks of accidents, depression, and difficulty accessing essential services.
This competition aims to reconnect seniors with their communities by inviting participants to create innovative housing systems that actively integrate elderly residents into the social fabric. The jury will be looking for designs that not only provide housing but also incorporate features that enable seniors to engage with their surroundings in meaningful ways.
With the freedom to select a site or location, participants have the opportunity to breathe new life into underprivileged areas, developing alternative visions for how architecture can address this pressing issue. Beyond Isolation: Senior Housing Competition is not simply about designing a house or apartment block; it encourages participants to explore additional functionalities such as retail shops, interest centers, and experience exchange hubs, all contributing to a sense of community and connection for seniors in their twilight years.
