Location
The project is located 500 meters north of the International Sand Skiing Center in the Beidaihe New District of Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province. It is a convenient 35-minute drive from both Qinhuangdao International Airport and Beidaihe High-Speed Railway Station, while the slightly farther Qinhuangdao Railway Station is about an hour's drive away. The hotel also offers shuttle services to accommodate guests.
Transportation
Situated on the renowned Golden Coast, Aranya benefits from excellent transportation links, offering flexible options for travelers. Besides Qinhuangdao International Airport, there are three train stations nearby—Beidaihe, Changli, and Qinhuangdao. Although Changli Station does not have high-speed rail service, and Qinhuangdao Station is farther away, most visitors opt to travel via high-speed rail to Beidaihe Station. Once guests arrive by plane or train, they have several convenient transport options to reach the project site:
Community Shuttle: The shuttle service caters to homeowners, hotel guests, and vacation rental visitors. It runs between Aranya and Beidaihe Railway Station, offering four round trips daily on weekends and public holidays. Tickets can be booked via the app, with a comfortable 40-minute ride costing RMB 25 per person. Additionally, there is a shuttle from Aranya to Beijing Outlets, a 4.5-hour trip priced at RMB 180 per person.
Private Transfer: Aranya offers private car services for residents and visitors, with vehicles ranging from luxury six-seaters to 51-seater buses. Reservations can be made based on specific needs by calling the Aranya hotline (4001155500 ext. 5) during working hours (9:00 AM to 5:30 PM).
Taxi or Ride-Hailing: Taxis and ride-hailing services are available at designated pick-up points at the airport and stations. A ride from Beidaihe Station costs around RMB 70, and from Qinhuangdao Airport, about RMB 100. Aranya can also assist with ride-booking services, either through a partnered fleet or via concierge assistance.
Self-Driving: Guests may choose to drive directly from their departure point or rent a car from the airport or railway station. Hotel guests can drive into the community with a valid reservation, while those staying in vacation rentals are required to park in designated areas outside the community and take a free shuttle inside. The park features real-time parking availability displays, and staff are on hand to provide guidance. Additionally, electric vehicles can be charged within the community, with dedicated charging stations available for Tesla and other brands.
Within Aranya, 5 free bus routes are operating throughout the community, allowing guests to easily access various destinations across the site.
Opening Time
The project is open year-round, with Beidaihe's average annual temperature ranging between 6°C and 16°C. However, summer remains the ideal season to visit, as Aranya’s coastal setting truly shines during this period. The peak season runs from late May to mid-October, when a variety of accommodations and experiential facilities are available to visitors.
Design Teams
Aranya has become a magnet for design teams, but unlike other high-profile projects in China, such as "Luhu," Aranya's nearly decade-long development has been marked by a focus on individuality over scale. While numerous exceptional teams have contributed to various facilities over the years, the selection process at Aranya prioritizes the unique character and creative alignment of the design teams rather than their commercial stature or global ranking.
Known for its emphasis on culture and spiritual exploration, Aranya's projects are not the work of large, globally recognized design corporations. Instead, they are the result of collaborations with independent studios, each chosen for their distinctive vision.
These design firms are typically led by their founders, experienced architects with strong, individualistic approaches. Most are between the ages of 40 and 55, bringing diverse backgrounds but united by their mature design philosophies and refined execution.
Design Collaborations
Aranya’s design collaborations feature some of China’s most prominent mid-career architects, selected based on two key factors:
Tailored Selection Process: Aranya understands its brand identity and carefully chooses design teams whose style aligns with the unique characteristics of each facility. The core architects of these firms are not only founders but also at the peak of their creative careers. They are poised for greater achievements in the future, both in terms of design recognition and market influence. For Aranya, this represents a value-driven investment and a mutually beneficial partnership that elevates both the project and the design team’s brand.
Architects' Perspective: Unlike traditional commercial real estate projects, each Aranya project is a one-of-a-kind, meticulously crafted masterpiece—there is no replication or mass production. The creative freedom offered, coupled with the low-density, high-quality design conditions and Aranya’s strong market appeal, makes collaboration highly attractive to design teams. Moreover, Aranya fosters a relationship of professional trust throughout the project’s life cycle. From the initial design to the operational phase, Aranya maintains high standards in areas such as aesthetic alignment with residents, cultural events, park management, service quality, and international brand collaborations. This ongoing feedback loop ensures that projects remain fresh and evolve towards perfection, encouraging design teams to invest more energy and commitment into their work.
This synergy between Aranya and its design partners ensures that each project not only stands the test of time but also continuously rejuvenates, reflecting the collaborative efforts of architects and the brand.
Design Philosophy
When Aranya's founder, Ma Yin, reflected on the creation of the iconic "Loneliest Library," he remarked, "At the beginning, we only considered its function as a space for reading by the sea. But over time, we realized that if the space could be used more richly and effectively, it would hold greater value and meaning." This realization led to a shift in approach. To enhance the experience and meaning of the park, and to highlight its core cultural and artistic strengths, Aranya adopted the slogan “Life Can Be More Beautiful.”
As the development grew, a diverse array of cultural and artistic buildings and facilities were constructed, each designed to align with Aranya's core values and lifestyle. The design ethos at Aranya consistently revolves around enriching life through art, culture, and thoughtful architectural spaces that elevate both form and function.
What values and lifestyle does Aranya advocate?
"As for the material aspect, it’s about quality simplicity and restrained abundance. On the spiritual level, it promotes a return to family, a return to nature, a return to tradition, and a return to an authentic, spiritual way of living," says Ma Yin with conviction. "I firmly believe that culture and art are the solutions for future lifestyles. Under this premise, every form of cultural and artistic expression acts as a bridge, a connection to a more meaningful life."
With this philosophy at its core, each design team brings its own unique interpretation to the table. While their methods and materials may vary, their creations all revolve around the same guiding values.
So, what is the design focus within Aranya?
A successful balance between content and form characterizes Aranya’s design. The project's uniqueness lies in its rich array of cultural and artistic activities and a homeowner community selected based on shared values. The design of each facility complements this by embracing a back-to-basics aesthetic, with simplicity and authenticity at its heart. It draws from nature and self-awareness, creating a harmonious atmosphere that blends form with the cultural and artistic activities taking place. This approach fosters a beautiful experience that connects the individual, nature, and community in meaningful ways.
Unlike mass-produced real estate developments, Aranya’s attention to detail extends beyond surface-level design aesthetics. The focus lies in the ongoing operation and maintenance of its facilities. Each cultural, artistic, and lifestyle service is crafted with meticulous care and high quality, perfectly aligning with the lifestyle that Aranya advocates for its residents.
The design of each facility serves as a foundation for extending the project's design narrative. Any adjustments to layouts or details within the spaces after the buildings are operational are made in close collaboration with the original designers. This ensures that the overall experience remains cohesive, avoiding any disconnect between the initial design vision and the lived experience.
Project Experience
Unlike the southern coastal cities with abundant beaches, northern China has fewer quality seaside destinations. Aranya’s location on the Golden Coast of Beidaihe is one of the better coastal resources in the north, with its scenic beauty and convenient transportation making it naturally appealing to people in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
However, while the natural environment is a clear asset, this area wasn’t always seen as a desirable destination. Before Aranya’s development, the land belonged to Yicheng Group, which had only generated RMB 40 million in sales in 2012 and was regarded as a distressed asset, nearly abandoned. It was Aranya’s founder, Ma Yin, who took over the project for RMB 260 million and transformed it into what it is today. The key to this transformation lies in Aranya’s vision and landscape design expertise, which turned the site into a desirable destination for tourism, leisure, and even home ownership.
What sparked this remarkable turnaround? What fueled Aranya’s success story? Before Aranya could promise a more beautiful life, it first had to rejuvenate its own.
From an aerial view, the entire Aranya park is a narrow strip running north to south, stretching along the coastline of Beidaihe. The thoughtful planning and strategic development have turned this previously overlooked area into a vibrant community where people come not only for the beach but also for the cultural and lifestyle experiences that Aranya offers.
The main entrance of the park is located at the west side, marked by the simple yet striking No. 1 gate. The design of the entrance area is minimalist, devoid of excessive decoration, featuring only Aranya's iconic white logo.
Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a central thoroughfare that runs through the entire park, extending all the way to the coastline. Here, we have organized the park’s current iconic buildings and spatial designs based on their design impact and overall experience, showcasing the thoughtful architectural narrative that unfolds as one traverses the landscape.
1. Seaside Chapel
Design Team: Vector Architects
Floor Area: 270 m²
Completion Year: 2015
“We envision this chapel as a ship that once drifted on the sea long ago. As time passed and the waters receded, what remains is a structure suspended above the sands, still hovering gracefully over the beach.” — Design Team
As one of Aranya’s earliest artistic edifices, the Seaside Chapel has become a must-visit landmark for tourists. From a design perspective, its aesthetic resonates with the comfort zone of the general public. Visitors may not recognize the similarities between the design of the Langxiang Chapel and this building, but they certainly appreciate the exquisite spire backed by the ocean. The tall stone steps paired with the textured white stucco façade, reflecting sunlight, create a striking visual that is perfect for photography. It’s no surprise that this spot is the only place in the park where visitors often line up to capture the perfect shot.
Despite its small scale, the chapel offers a captivating experience. A pathway extends from 30 meters away on the beach, leading to the edge closest to the sea, where steps ascend toward the chapel. This narrow 60-centimeter slit divides the flow of visitors, heightening the sense of ritual. As one ascends the steps into the upper chapel space, glimpses of the lower area can be seen through the narrow opening, hinting at its connection to the sea.
Stepping into the two distinct levels reveals a thoughtful contrast. The upper space is intimate and refined, with curved walls, low windows, and a concrete vaulted ceiling that softly captures light. This design guides the gaze and fosters a meditative, tranquil atmosphere, creating a sense of safety where one can pause and reflect.
In contrast, the lower level is rugged and expansive, with platforms and columns reaching directly into the sea and sand. The ocean breeze rushes past, and fine sand whimsically swirls around the platform, embodying a spirit of freedom and an invigorating energy that encourages release. The functional design of both levels allows for separate use by different groups while also guiding visitors toward distinct experiences based on their moods. The chapel’s ability to serve as a small-scale spiritual structure, rich in guidance and interest, is truly commendable.
As the only building in Aranya transformed into a LEGO brick commemorative gift, the Seaside Chapel frequently takes center stage in various collaborative events. Each time its façade is adorned with a fresh decoration, it embodies Aranya’s brand and image, capturing the attention of visitors and featuring prominently in media coverage.
Undoubtedly, the Seaside Chapel stands as a primary symbol of Aranya, evoking memories of past experiences and future events. While the adage "less is more" may feel clichéd, the concept of "small triumphs over large" may offer a more relevant lesson for the future. This charming structure continues to inspire and engage, making it a true landmark of creativity and community spirit within Aranya.
2、The Solitary Library
Design Team: Vector Architects
Floor Area: 450 m²
Completion Year: 2015
“The main concept behind this design is to explore the boundaries of space, the movement of the body, the changes in light and atmosphere, the circulation of air, and the coexistence of these elements with the ocean view. The library’s east side faces the sea and serves the residents of the nearby community during spring, summer, and autumn, while also being open to the public free of charge. The design begins with the cross-section, consisting of a primary reading area, a meditation space, an activity room, and a small water bar lounge. We defined the relationship between each space and the sea based on their functional requirements, shaping how light and wind enter the interiors.” — Design Team
This is one of Aranya's earliest public art buildings, completed six months prior to the Seaside Chapel. From a distance, the library stands alone by the sea, surrounded by a stark landscape devoid of any vegetation. Its exterior appears as unadorned concrete at the entrance, conveying a sense of enclosure and ruggedness. However, the side facing the ocean is entirely open, featuring expansive floor-to-ceiling glass that transforms the library into a viewing platform oriented toward the sea.
Visitors frequently gather around this structure, and while it's unclear if the designers considered optimal photography spots during the design process, the power of social media has made it evident. Tourists have discovered their preferred photo opportunities at various corners of the building, with notable spots including the area beneath the entrance's retaining wall and the scenic corridor to the right, both offering stunning views that perfectly capture the essence of the library against its coastal backdrop.
Due to restricted access, the interior of the library is significantly less populated than the exterior. Inside, the atmosphere is tranquil, with attention drawn to the sea view through the large windows, the glass bricks used to conceal the structural trusses, the 30-centimeter circular ventilation holes in the concrete ceiling, and the tiered reading areas surrounded by bookshelves. Although the interior design is simple rather than luxurious, sitting quietly in a high spot in the reading hall when there are few people around offers a truly delightful experience facing the sea.
The separate meditation space on one side is designed with a lighting scheme intended to create a serene environment where one can listen to the sound of the sea without seeing it. However, this ideal experience is best enjoyed when the area is free from the bustle of other visitors.
It's worth noting the treatment of the wood-grain concrete texture in the architectural materials, which stands out as a commendable attempt to blend harmoniously with the site's atmosphere. This approach provides a refreshing alternative to the ubiquitous raw concrete style often seen in contemporary art buildings.
3. Dune Art Museum
Design Team: OPEN Architecture
Floor Area: 930 m²
Completion Date: 2018
“The coastal dunes have formed over long periods through natural accumulation and the movement of wind and sand, with their roots solidifying the landscape. By situating the art museum beneath the dunes, we not only pay homage to nature but also provide protection: the existence of the Dune Art Museum ensures that these dunes will never be artificially ‘flattened,’ preserving the fragile dune ecosystem that has developed over centuries. Inspired by children’s play of digging in the sand by the sea, the architects sought to ‘excavate’ a series of interconnected ‘caves’ within the dunes—an echo of humanity's most primitive forms of shelter and earliest spaces for artistic creation. This series of cellular, continuous spaces creates a rich functional environment within the Dune Art Museum, including exhibition halls of various sizes, a reception area, and a café.” — Design Team
As the only art museum within the Aranya resort that requires a separate ticket for entry, the Dune Art Museum offers an experience that is highly anticipated. The design team has embedded the entire building into the beach, creating a natural spatial atmosphere through the form of dune caves. For visitors accustomed to conventional box-like or uniquely shaped structures, this simplicity is a refreshing return to authenticity.
The entrance, somewhat hidden and resembling a cave, is modest in scale, tapering down as one moves deeper inside. By the time you reach the doorway, it is barely wide enough for a single person to pass through, evoking the intimate feel of a natural cave. Once inside, visitors experience a remarkable expansion of space; the height of the central hall and the openings in the skylight starkly contrast with the narrow entrance. The three openings facing the sea provide a transformative experience, making it feel as though the interior space is a different world altogether, accessed after passing through the main thoroughfare of the resort.
The interior lighting is wonderfully soft, with sunlight filtering through the irregularly sized openings in the ceiling, creating an atmosphere of tranquil mystery. The three-dimensional white concrete shell features a textured surface handcrafted by local shipbuilders, offering a tactile experience that, while distinct from the expected sandy grain of the dunes, still resonates with a natural aesthetic.
Each room is designed to resemble a cave, providing natural separations, while areas such as restrooms and staircases evoke a sense of spontaneous formation. The design of doors, windows, bar counters, and washbasins aligns harmoniously with the building's primitive style. In addition to serving as exhibition spaces, some areas are also conducive to relaxation. The dimmed environment, complemented by soft light filtering from above and paired with soothing background music, creates an inviting ambiance that makes visitors reluctant to leave.
The rooftop terrace on the second floor evokes memories of the rooftop garden at Japan's Ghibli Museum in Mitaka. Here, visitors can not only gaze out at the expansive ocean but also overlook the interior rooms from above. However, it would be delightful if the rooftop could incorporate additional storytelling elements in the future, offering a touch of surprise and intrigue.
Some have questioned why the Sand Dune Museum isn’t adorned in the familiar yellow hues of the dunes. Perhaps, when the lights illuminate the building at night, they might find satisfaction in its unique allure.
4、Kennels
Design Team: Atelier GOM
Floor Area: 4,682 m²
Completion Date: 2021
"In considering my role, I realized I wasn’t tasked with creating a ‘small spiritual building’ that disregards time and cost, as Ma Yin might. Instead, I was responsible for a commercial structure that had to take these factors into account. After much deliberation, I chose to abandon the architect’s so-called pursuit of extremes in favor of a hidden structural framework. By utilizing the tiny overlapping junctions of two stacked boxes, I was able to locate the positions of the frame columns, employing various architectural techniques to essentially make the columns disappear within the lower guest room spaces." — Design Team
We believe the Kennels is one of the must-visit destinations within the Anaya complex. Beyond the striking visual courtyard created by its inherent triangular shape, this space genuinely integrates architectural design with an enhanced experiential quality. The primary intention behind the Kennel was to provide a better facility for those vacationing in the area with pets (cats and dogs). It not only offers a pet-friendly environment but also fosters warmth and enriching experiences for families with furry companions.
In terms of pet-friendliness, the Kennel features a streamlined entry design that minimizes conflicts between pets, thoughtful spatial layouts that accommodate both humans and animals at different scales, and varied floor heights. To prevent pets from staring at each other, the primary orientations of all guest room units have been adjusted accordingly. Additionally, the hotel offers facilities such as a pet grooming salon and a pet park, all meticulously designed to enhance the quality of life for both guests and their furry companions.
On the other hand, the architectural design showcases its unique charm through technical innovation. The structural design has evolved from the initial thick slab “plate framework” to the current “hidden framework.” While there are regrets in this transition, it still reflects a commitment to architectural excellence. The concealment and reservation of equipment pipelines not only mitigate negative visual impacts but also expand considerations for future functionality.
Further details include the treated cast-in-place concrete tops of varying sizes, innovative waterproof materials, stainless steel fluorocarbon-coated railings for embedded components, perforated stainless steel panels to conceal outdoor air conditioning units, custom stainless steel expansion joint covers for exposed concrete, refined small hardware adjustments post-completion, and solutions for drains that were affected by paving height inconsistencies. “The final presentation is a natural evolution based on factors such as energy efficiency, fire safety, cost, and operational considerations.”
“Technology is a crucial factor in the iterative development of architecture, and beauty arises inherently from technology itself.”
5、 Children's Farm
Design Team: Z + T STUDIO / odd design office (Café)
Floor Area: 290 m²
Completion Date: 2018
“The Chinese spirit of finding joy in hardship is evident in every aspect of life. ‘Life is short, but why not enjoy it under candlelight?’ The struggles of daily life call for frequent getaways to restore balance. Visitors to Anaya seek relaxation, simplicity, and pure joy. The world is filled with mythical beasts like Taotie, Qiongqi, and the Three-Tailed Huan… When the fantastical journey of the Shan Hai Jing meets a modern resort, ideas for a Fishbone Pavilion, Eel Benches, Starfish Flower Fields, Climbing Shells, and Five-Clawed Octopus Slides come rushing forth. The narrow triangular strip between the sand dunes and the roads transforms into a Children’s Farm, encompassing both a farm and a playground.” — Design Team
Everyone goes to the seaside to see the ocean, so does a coastal resort really need a park? This question found its answer in the design team’s reflections: “Anaya is a vacation destination, but a week-long getaway doesn’t mean spending every moment on the beach.” Thus, beside an existing locust tree grove, they designed a children’s farm park to serve the entire resort.
The site features a prominent large dune, with the locust trees above it preserved in their entirety. Native to North America, locust trees were introduced to China in the 19th century and became a primary afforestation species in the coastal sandy regions after the founding of the country. Over the past decade, locust forests along the coastal sand dunes have decreased significantly, prompting the design team to fully preserve this woodland. They noted, “Only the resilient locust trees can thrive on the barren dunes. The forest is lush and green in summer, while winter reveals its stark, desolate beauty, amplifying the changing seasons. Our design for the locust grove is intentionally simple, allowing people to confront nature directly. We hope visitors will slow down, or even pause, upon entering the grove to feel the passage of time.”
The design divides the site into two distinct areas: a meditative space within the forest and a farm activity playground. In the forested area, a wooden walkway and acrylic screens are constructed, allowing visitors to wander through the trees and experience the shifting natural atmosphere.
The farm integrates elements of knowledge about flora and fauna, agricultural irrigation, and non-motorized playground facilities. Drawing inspiration from the "Shan Hai Jing" (Classic of Mountains and Seas), the design features animal-shaped installations such as the fishbone pavilion, eel benches, starfish flower fields, climbing conchs, and five-clawed octopus slides. These structures leave a lasting impression through their visual appeal and interactive qualities.
The café is situated along the main road of Anaya, set amidst a spacious area filled with lush vegetation. Its subtly raised, 120mm-thick curved aluminum roof appears as if lifted by a gentle breeze, providing a canopy reminiscent of a jellyfish floating among aquatic plants, offering shade and coolness to visitors.
Despite its modest 90 square meters, the extensive use of transparent floor-to-ceiling glass seamlessly merges the indoor space with the outdoors, accentuating the floating quality of the roof and the lightness of the lower areas. A small inner courtyard adds an element of dynamism to the space, while an outdoor column design features a circular seating area, allowing visitors to enjoy the unique “under-the-umbrella space” that bridges the indoor and outdoor environments.
Many outdoor playgrounds for children in Western cities are designed and built within communities and parks. In contrast, the Anaya Children's Farm beautifully combines this concept with Eastern sensibilities, creating a unique and harmonious space that reflects the best of both worlds.
6. Aranya Art Center
Design Team: Neri&Hu
Building Area: 1,500 m²
Completion Date: 2019
"The local seawater undergoes seasonal changes influenced by the climate—during summer, it is a serene blue, while in winter, it freezes over. The conceptual design of the Art Center draws inspiration from these seasonal variations, aiming to encapsulate the wonders of nature within the core of the building." — Design Team
The Art Center stands as a unique design endeavor and a successful project collaboration. Hu Rushan, the founder of Neri&Hu, has made numerous innovative attempts to explore how art and public spaces can seamlessly integrate. The location of Aranya complements this vision in various ways, enhancing the overall presentation of the project.
“The building's outer mass is substantial, maximizing the use of the site area, while at its center, an inverted circular platform has been carved out, creating a tiered amphitheater. This spatial form accommodates a variety of uses; the circular plaza can transform into a water feature when filled, and once drained, it serves as a venue for performances and gatherings. This versatility not only attracts larger crowds but also invigorates the arts, making the project not merely an artistic space but also a vibrant hub for community sharing and congregation.”
The substantial volume of the building seamlessly connects a series of spaces, allowing visitors to stroll freely and ascend gradually while enjoying a meticulously curated journey of both interior and exterior vistas. The primary function of the art space is to showcase and experience art, and the Art Center is no exception. The spiraling circulation guides visitors through each gallery space, continually sparking their desire to engage with the artworks. At the base of the inverted cone, a café, a multifunctional gallery, and a circular outdoor theater are situated. From this point, a circular corridor leads visitors through five unique gallery spaces, culminating at the building's summit, where they can take in the surrounding landscapes and the activities within the building.
The Aranya Art Center breaks free from the traditional approaches to exhibition architecture, presenting a modern, minimalist artistic interpretation reminiscent of Winterfell from Game of Thrones. Designed with the intent of fostering public gathering and artistic communication, the space spirals upward, creating a dynamic interplay of sightlines. The central area is expansive, while the corridors offer a sense of intrigue. The courtyard design allows for a seamless transition between the reflecting pool and the plaza, which, while not uncommon, becomes particularly captivating when combined with the corridor layout. This thoughtful integration provides a rich emotional experience for visitors, especially for the community residents who frequent the space.
Another noteworthy aspect is the façade design, which features a distinctive, understated color palette and texture—setting it apart from most public buildings in Anaya, which tend to be white or light-toned. The exterior is composed of concrete brick walls, bronze eaves and fittings, conical openings, and deformed textured glass. Surrounded by light-colored, warm-toned residential buildings, the art center stands out as a serene piece of art amidst the surrounding bustle.
As night falls, the building transforms from its daytime graphite hue to a deep blue, with the matrix of conical textures on the façade resembling the ripples of the sea. The warm orange lights glowing through the conical openings create a captivating effect, making the structure seem to breathe softly under the moonlight. I saw my colleague standing by a window, bathed in the orange glow, waving at me. From a distance, the Anaya Art Center felt like a gentle embrace from a resting giant blue whale, welcoming you into its serene presence.
7、Aranya Theater
Design Team: TAO (Trace Architecture Office)
Floor Area: 4,046 m²
Completion Date: 2020
“A building complex with an open posture, a theater that belongs to the city.” — Design Team.
This theater complex consists of three distinct venues: the A Theater, the Hive Theater, and the Bacchus Theater, arranged from tallest to shortest. Corresponding to the building's height, the internal spaces also range from large to small:
A. The A Theater, with 550 seats, is characterized by its grand and solemn atmosphere, providing an immersive space that accommodates a variety of functions, from dramatic performances to concerts, exhibitions, shows, and auto expos.
B. The Hive Theater, with a capacity of 300 seats, is dedicated to professional theatrical performances, showcasing works from the Meng Jinghui Drama Studio as well as other avant-garde experimental plays. The architecture is equipped with specialized facilities and acoustics tailored for this purpose.
C. The Dionysus Theater is an outdoor venue with no fixed seating, facing the sea and designed for open-air performances. When not in use for events, it transforms into a vibrant urban plaza at the street corner. This space supports a range of activities, from performances and gatherings to relaxation and seaside viewing, enriching the public life of the small town. Moreover, the Dionysus Theater offers actors the flexibility to explore various staging and movement possibilities. Their performance area extends beyond the traditional stage, allowing them to utilize different heights, angles, and transit spaces, thus inspiring innovative modes of expression.
In terms of experiential impact, the Dionysus Theater leaves a lasting impression, primarily due to its expansive outdoor space that opens towards the sea. This seamless connection with the surrounding road and pedestrian flow invites passersby to easily see and enter the venue. For a cultural community like Anaya, which embraces a particular ethos, this design not only enhances the venue’s relevance but also amplifies its allure and sense of engagement.
The other two indoor theaters, being traditional fully enclosed venues connected by a shared foyer, prioritize functional utility over experimental design. (It’s worth noting that the Hive Theater initially featured an innovative concept of an outward-opening stage, which, unfortunately, did not come to fruition.)
The combination of the three theaters resonates well with the surrounding environment, harmonizing effectively with the site's topography and pathways, as well as between the spaces and entrances of the buildings. In terms of material selection, the designers emphasized the use of a solid facade composed of metal and two types of stone, endowing each theater with its unique character. Black metal, seabed coral stone, and light-colored granite each symbolize the designer's interpretation of the spiritual essence of the three venues. Overall, the architecture and its location are memorable, while the diverse array of theatrical performances and events it hosts further enhance Aranya's visibility and vibrancy.
However, there is an interesting note regarding the naming of the Dionysus Theater. The choice of “Dionysus” seems intended to reflect Aranya’s cultural emphasis on the vitality and drama represented by the Greek god of wine. Yet, from the final design expression and the sense of place, it does not evoke the true spirit of Dionysus.
In the context of Western philosophers and writers, such as Nietzsche, who utilize the dichotomy of the Dionysian and Apollonian to represent a "dualism," the free-spirited, passionate, and romantic essence of the Dionysian spirit seems to be absent here. Instead, the design leans towards a classicism and formalism characterized by the Apollonian spirit. The traditional symmetry and classical forms that emerge in the theater’s design create an impression that feels somewhat disconnected from the true Dionysian spirit.
In ancient Greek Dionysian rituals, the initial goal was to dissolve the boundaries between individuals, but the true focus of the Dionysian pursuit lies in the release of one’s inner nature and a return to the natural world, a pursuit distinct from the “dreams” represented by the Apollonian spirit. While in contemporary discourse, Dionysus and Apollo are merely metaphors for different artistic styles (and in Greek mythology, they are not adversaries), here, the design appears somewhat too symmetrical and orderly.
8、The TANG Hotel
Design Team: B.L.U.E. Architecture Studio
Floor Area: 3,000 m²
Completion Date: 2021
“In today’s world, modern families are trending toward smaller and more individualized structures, as traditional family units based on marriage or blood ties gradually dissolve. We are moving into an era of individuality. As the spaces people occupy in urban environments shrink, and as there is growing fatigue with self-centered lifestyles, the importance of community becomes increasingly evident. Simultaneously, with the development of the internet and virtual spaces, the value of physical space has shifted from providing specific functional uses to fulfilling deeper emotional needs.
Truly valuable places can seamlessly integrate living spaces, social interaction areas, and cultural venues, creating a comprehensive experiential environment. In this context, architecture must serve as a platform, offering opportunities for people to connect and rediscover the value of emotional engagement.” — Design Team.
The Tang Hotel embodies the strongest sense of community within the Anaya Resort area in Beidaihe. Its first impression evokes images of low-density apartments in North America, characterized by its low-rise, enclosed architecture featuring white and light wood facades. Balconies and small gardens enhance the sense of intimacy among residents. Compared to other hotels in Anaya, the atmosphere and spatial design here feel the most unique and comfortable.
The designers aimed to break away from the static nature of traditional hotel rooms, with their inherent privacy and isolation, instead emphasizing dynamic circulation, a sense of sharing, and communal interaction. They expanded the concept of negative space between different guest rooms, fostering connections between individuals. The design philosophy is clear: “We believe this represents a possibility for a ‘shared community’ for modern people. The concept of ‘home’ should extend beyond the confines of the house, showcasing a variety of forms.” Indeed, we find ourselves willing to engage in conversation in the various communal spaces here, whether standing or sitting.
The building's facade design is characterized by its simplicity and aesthetic appeal, continuing the design language of architect Akira Yoshizawa. The varying sizes of light-toned volumes harmoniously integrate with the surrounding site, creating a pleasing visual experience through modular design. The design essence crafted for the middle class manifests here much like their everyday attire, prioritizing comfort and relaxation.
The interior design is more nuanced than one might expect, emphasizing lighting and spatial design over decorative elements. The fully open lobby seamlessly blends various indoor functions—check-in area, café, bar, and lounge—creating a space that could easily transform into a WeWork with just a few changes to the office furniture. Most guest rooms are located on the second floor, primarily consisting of small units around 20 to 30 square meters, with the exception of family suites on the first floor. The designers aimed to encourage guests to spend more time outside their rooms, prioritizing outdoor interactions and communal areas.
Simultaneously, the design of the guest rooms employs natural materials such as wood, textured paints, and limestone to foster a serene, understated atmosphere. In response to the coastal humidity, treatments were applied to wooden surfaces to prevent rot and moisture, while dehumidifiers are provided within the rooms to ensure guest comfort, reflecting a commitment to quality in the details.
The designers have truly delivered by placing the expansive public lounge in the prime location facing the ocean, positioned on the second floor right at the hotel entrance. The separate warm-toned wooden façade of this square box captures attention, ensuring that passersby can't help but notice it at a glance. The generous use of floor-to-ceiling glass invites everyone to come in and make new connections. This thoughtful design choice significantly enhances the overall appeal of the hotel.
9、YIN Hotels
Design Team: 复合建筑X百年建筑
Floor Area: 2,523 m²
Completion Date: 2022
"Nestled by the sea, the hotel resembles a fleeting yacht gliding over the ocean's surface." — Design Team.
This hotel is one of the newer additions to Aranya and boasts a prime coastal location along the Golden Coast. Unlike several other newly constructed hotels in Aranya that are set back from the shore, YIN Hotels benefits from unobstructed ocean views and proximity to landmarks such as the seaside hall, the Solitary Library, and the Dune Art Museum, giving it a distinct advantage from the outset.
Another striking aspect is the hotel's design philosophy, which draws inspiration from the concept of a yacht. The use of avant-garde industrial materials, such as corrugated aluminum panels, combined with interiors that mimic the textures of yacht cabins, and the youthful ambiance of the lobby and bar, all contribute to an atmosphere that embodies the essence of a boutique hotel.
The design of the hotel goes beyond the cool yacht concept and futuristic industrial aesthetics; it also carefully cultivates a sense of vacation and warmth in many aspects, such as the choice of flooring and carpeting materials, as well as the lighting design in public areas.
"The hotel rooms are categorized based on orientation and attributes, with options for ocean-view and sound-of-the-sea rooms. The ocean-view standard rooms feature curved, colorful aluminum panels, their form and hue evoking the scene of yachts reflecting the light on the water. The ocean-view suites, adorned with white teak flooring and white wall fabrics, create a texture that refracts ambient light, giving guests the sensation of lightness, as if floating on the sea's surface. Although the sound-of-the-sea rooms do not face the ocean, the lively voices and ambiance of the beach nearby still provide an auditory connection that resonates with the spirit."
Beyond offering more space than a typical yacht bedroom, the interior design of the guest rooms continues the futuristic industrial aesthetic found in the public areas. The spatial layout evokes a sense of yacht replication while integrating a diverse palette of colors and materials that emphasize comfort. In the bathrooms, rainbow glass is used to balance privacy with the overall design, while certain details reflect minimalist design principles and a sense of technology. This thoughtful approach ensures that guests can truly immerse themselves in a vacation atmosphere and unwind in style.
Perhaps influenced by the recent surge in popularity of cyberpunk aesthetics, this hotel is poised to attract a youthful demographic and offers ample opportunities for pop-up designs. As various collaborative conceptual events unfold in the future at Aranya, we can anticipate that this venue will make a striking impression.
10、Children's Restaurant
Design Team: Wutopia Lab
Building Area: 1000 m²
Completion Date: 2018
“We hope that Wutopia Lab’s architectural practice can transform daily life through rich imagination and exaggerated artistic techniques, turning the mundane into a form of 'magical realism.' Our aim is to create daily miracles that reveal the truths of real life. We strive to design spaces that bridge reality and fantasy without losing their authenticity, and the Anaya Children's Restaurant serves as the best example of this design philosophy.” — Design Team.
The Aranya Children's Restaurant is one of the earlier projects completed within the park, yet its distinctiveness remains remarkably pronounced, continuing to attract visitors to this day. Spanning 1,000 square meters, this children's restaurant has been transformed from an existing prairie villa-style building, entirely enveloped in polycarbonate panels that create a translucent white polymer curtain. A lush landscape serves as a seamless transition between the old and new facades, enhancing the overall aesthetic of the space.
The reconfigured circulation leads visitors into the restaurant from the second floor, where a vibrant yellow spray-painted metal staircase, adorned with intricate cutouts, stands out against the white facade, making it both lively and easily recognizable. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a circular hall enclosed by frosted PVC tubes, evoking a whimsical atmosphere that feels pure and beautiful within the all-white interior. The use of polycarbonate panels adds a touch of futurism to the space, enhancing its enchanting appeal.
Descending from the second floor's curved staircase into the "Starlit Dreamscape" on the ground level, the atmosphere transforms into a mysterious realm reminiscent of wandering through space. The use of materials such as PVC hollow balls, fiberglass cloth, ocean plastic spheres, and artificial stone creates a whimsical playground where children can frolic and play. Surrounding funhouse mirrors distort both space and time, visually transcending the boundaries of reality and enhancing the surreal experience.
Simultaneously, the space is adorned with dual-themed restrooms, mirror ponds, bubble trees, stainless steel slides, and trampolines, all thoughtfully positioned in the corners. These playful elements encourage children to unleash their curiosity and explore for delightful surprises at every turn.
Ultimately, guided by the yellow path markings on the floor, children can find their way to the rooftop via a striking yellow staircase, leading them to the most astonishing feature of the entire design: the red flying house. Traversing across the stainless steel water surface and passing the bubble trees, they ascend to the roof, where the space gradually opens up, and the light becomes increasingly radiant.
The red flying house, constructed from double-layer perforated aluminum panels, features a polygonal structure that casts intricate shadows in the sunlight, resembling both a crown and a torch. This striking landmark embodies beauty and innocence, and when illuminated, it stands out like a beacon, capturing everyone's attention and evoking the enduring values of truth, goodness, and beauty—pure and romantic.
11、 Seaside Market
Design Team: 建言建筑
Building Area: 500 m²
Completion Year: 2019
“By integrating local specialties and diverse creative industries, we aim to create a leisurely space where visitors can stroll, pause, and relax, fostering a vibrant marketplace infused with the essence of everyday life.” — Design Team.
The Seaside Market is a small supermarket within the Anaya complex, characterized by its design style that prominently features red brick, timber, and steel trusses as its primary structural materials. This vibrant space serves as a hub for leisure activities in the area and marks the entrance to the commercial complex. Surrounding it are cafés, bookstores, dessert shops, a cinema, and various boutique stores, making the Seaside Market a landmark for everyday life in Anaya. The spacious plaza and terrace seating, along with the red brick and workshop-inspired architecture, evoke an artistic ambiance reminiscent of Beijing's 798 Art District.
Inside, the building houses a boutique supermarket primarily stocked with everyday essentials at affordable prices, accompanied by warm and attentive service at the checkout. Though the space may be modest, it plays a significant role in the daily life of the Anaya community, leading to the establishment of a second location by the seaside. The overall interior design exudes a down-to-earth quality, utilizing black steel frames, terrazzo, and wooden shelving to highlight the local coastal character.
12、 Equestrian Center
Design Team: 汇一建筑
Building Area: 2,751 m²
Completion Date: 2020
"The design conceptualizes both horses and humans as the primary subjects, recognizing that a singular perspective cannot foster their coexistence. This understanding transforms the project into not just a venue for equestrian sports, but also a space where individuals can connect with, approach, and truly comprehend horses." — Design Team.
Upon first glance at the Aranya Equestrian Center, we expected it to be a tranquil retreat tucked away in a corner of the park. However, our on-site visit revealed its location adjacent to the transportation hub of the Anaya community, opening directly onto a main road and an expansive outdoor riding arena. This placement is intentional on the part of the design team, allowing residents of the community to naturally and frequently witness the activities here. The interaction between horses and people serves as a crucial component in fostering the ecological environment of the neighborhood.
The design team has cleverly integrated the various functional areas through a plaza that connects different building volumes. Whether it’s the outdoor riding arena at the front, the children's riding area at the back, or the indoor equestrian facility, each space seamlessly extends to the next. This layout offers residents inviting places to relax, share, and communicate, ensuring comfort both visually and spatially.
The reception area features a second-floor lounge and outdoor terrace, allowing visitors to observe the outdoor riding arena from an elevated perspective, capturing the dynamic movements of the horses. The children's riding area is conveniently situated between the reception center and the indoor equestrian facility, facilitating a smooth functional transition while providing kids with a playful space to interact closely with the miniature ponies. Cross-shaped steel columns wrapped in charred wood support aluminum folding sunshades, while the overhanging eaves and shaded walkways on either side offer parents a cool retreat as they accompany their children in play.
The 10-meter-high indoor equestrian arena, covering an area of 1,350 square meters, stands as the centerpiece of this facility. Its basilica-style architecture features cantilevered spaces on both sides, providing inviting areas for relaxation. The metal perforated folding panels on the façade not only enhance the building's aesthetic appeal but also filter natural light while reducing glare inside. The exposed concrete frame structure and brick exterior contrast beautifully with the upper metal cladding, creating a dynamic interplay of lightness and solidity in the roof design.
The stables and logistics area are intentionally located in a quieter spot, away from the main thoroughfare. However, they deviate from traditional notions of enclosure and roughness, embracing a landscape design that promotes openness. This creates the impression of a backyard where people and horses coexist harmoniously. Lush vegetation, trees, lawns, and paved paths are thoughtfully distributed throughout the space, fostering a relaxed atmosphere that flows seamlessly, much like the unobstructed pathways around the facility.
13、 Anlan Hotel
Design Team: 建言建筑 (Architecture) / Didoong (Landscape)
Floor Area: 36,000 m²
Completion Date: 2017
“Constrained by factors such as the environment, craftsmanship, and cost, this design boldly employs some reverse thinking: prioritizing children's spaces, utilizing neutral textures, and incorporating concrete water features and swimming pools.” — Design Team.
The Anlan Hotel stands out as the most popular hotel within the Anaya community, attributed to its scale, value for money, prime location, comprehensive facilities, exclusive transportation services, and attentive room service. However, what truly sets Anlan apart is its cohesive design and layout, which exemplifies the overall image of Anaya. The combination of thoughtful architecture and well-curated interiors positions Anlan as a quintessential representation of the community’s ethos and aesthetic.
The name "Anlan," derived from the phrase meaning "peace and tranquility," reflects a sense of calmness and harmony. The hotel is set in a spacious location, featuring a wing-like layout that ensures all guest rooms enjoy excellent views and privacy. The concrete structure is complemented by a clean white facade, with large floor-to-ceiling windows and expansive balconies that open up to the outdoors. This design creates a subtle elegance and an effortless, comfortable resort atmosphere, making Anlan a perfect retreat.
The landscape design enriches the overall ambiance of Anlan Hotel, enhancing its appeal. A striking feature at the entrance is the 25-meter curved water pool, which extends the sense of space in the entrance area. The organically shaped pool, with its layered rippling design, softens the hotel's otherwise cold and rigid aesthetic. Additionally, the hollow sculptures on the landscape island and the brass leaf motifs embedded at the bottom of the pool add a playful visual interest, creating a captivating first impression for guests.
The children's playground at the front adds a lively personality to the space. The blue soft rubber running track, resembling concrete, enhances the vibrancy of the color scheme, while the 80-meter outdoor trampoline track introduces additional playfulness and variety to the area.
The pool area at the back features a children's splash pool, an adult pool, a bar, and outdoor shower changing rooms and restrooms. Beyond fulfilling functional needs, the dry fountains and multi-level children's play areas add an element of fun. At the far end, transparent glass connecting the concrete pool edge enhances the visual impact and overall impression of the space.
Building on the existing ecological landscape of locust trees and foxtail grass, the hotel site features a wooden walkway for leisurely strolls, complemented by thoughtful lighting design that creates a serene atmosphere. Additionally, the use of curved edges on the originally polygonal structures enhances the environment's sense of approachability, making it feel more inviting for guests.
Each hotel room spans over 58 square meters, making them more spacious than the average room size in other Anaya hotels. The interior design, ranging from deluxe double rooms to family suites, embodies Anaya's classic and understated aesthetic, complemented by minimalist yet elegant furnishings. Additionally, the hotel features two brightly colored family-themed rooms to cater to the diverse needs of parent-child families, enhancing the overall appeal and personalization of the stay.
Certainly, we recognize that Anlan Hotel is well-known for its convenient shuttle service throughout the resort and its highly praised room service quality. However, the outstanding hotel facilities and site design significantly enhance its overall appeal, providing guests with a more enjoyable and memorable experience.
14、Naïve Ideal Country Youth Hostel
Design Team: designRESERVE
Building Area: 900 m²
Completion Date: 2021
“Although the 'identity' of residents in the Aanya community primarily consists of families from the middle class, this does not prevent it from attracting a younger generation that travels lighter. This demographic, particularly Generation Z and the younger Generation Alpha, has grown up in a world where electronic media has completely surpassed print books as the mainstream mode of knowledge dissemination. Reading is no longer confined to paper; it has become multifaceted and interactive. Travel increasingly disregards distance and instead emphasizes connectivity. As an ancient destination, bookstores are undoubtedly facing extinction. The path to salvation lies not in pitting physical books against electronic devices but in merging the physical with the digital.” — Design Team
As the most affordable accommodation option within the Aranya complex, its "youth hostel" label primarily relies on the "Naïve Ideal Country" concept bookstore culture to attract young guests. Under one roof, the functions of the bookstore (which includes a bar) and the hostel are seamlessly integrated.
The project is located in the sixth phase of the commercial district, adjacent to the Hive Theater, but positioned on a quieter side street away from the main road. Both the bookstore and the hostel occupy the ground floor, while the upper level houses apartments, each with its own independent entrance. The bookstore is situated prominently at the center of the district, while the hostel is located on the side.
The overall facade design features a wrapping of white, wave-shaped polished steel panels, complemented by a youthful logo design in white with integrated lighting. The interior employs a color palette of white and gray, with large floor-to-ceiling windows that enhance the sense of openness, creating a bright and youthful atmosphere. To optimize the already limited interior space, all shelves, wall decorations, and ceiling treatments utilize thin metal sheets, imparting a sense of lightness that alleviates any feeling of spatial constriction.
Functionally, as a hybrid bookstore, the design integrates several innovative elements. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a large multimedia screen wall, showcasing promotional videos for "See Ideal" (a paid knowledge channel produced by Ideal Country) across multiple screens. Passing through this screen wall leads into the bookstore, where a central bar serves as the main service area. The bar is surrounded by seating and embodies the "Day Coffee, Night Drinks" concept, providing both coffee and alcoholic beverages while also catering to the bookstore's everyday needs. Adjacent to the bar, a glass display wall showcases books and related memorabilia, emphasizing the accessibility of physical items without excessive distance between displays. Reading sofas are arranged by the windows, creating a space that combines elements reminiscent of Yin Hotels' cruise concept with a more straightforward, vibrant young party culture.
The accommodation facilities here represent another creative hybrid function, divided into two tiers based on price. One tier consists of four "Writing Rooms" located within the bookstore, while the other is the youth hostel with a separate entrance adjacent to the bookstore.
The "Writing Rooms," tucked away in a secluded corner of the bookstore, range from 25 to 37 square meters and come fully equipped with amenities. The interior design features a warm wood aesthetic in a minimalist style; while not luxurious, each room boasts its own private courtyard and view.
The youth hostel, accessed through an entrance on the side of the bookstore, offers a design distinctly different from the bookstore’s ambiance. It incorporates light green floor tiles, silver-striped aluminum panels, wooden bookshelves, expansive backlit mirrors, fabric sofas, and industrial-style pendant lighting, creating a vibrant and relaxed atmosphere akin to a youthful gathering space.
The hostel's room design resembles cabin-style bunk beds, featuring a clean and warm color palette infused with modern industrial textures. The hostel accommodates six four-person rooms and four single rooms, totaling 28 beds, with shared bathrooms and facilities.
“Naïve 理想国” provides a diversified, youthful complement to the Anaya community. Whether targeting clients from the 80s, 90s, or even the 00s and 10s generations, creative design and marketing have always been Anaya’s strengths. As a result, amidst the surge of viral videos promoting slogans like "spontaneous travel" and "youth has no price," Anaya has gained increased visibility and presence.
15、New Wish Lighthouse
Design Team: Vector Architects
Building Area: 20 m²
Completion Date: 2022
“At night, the lights within the lighthouse flicker, and the shifting brightness creates a breathing ‘container’ that houses and showcases 204 special ‘wishes.’ It embodies the hopes of life, guiding lost souls and symbolizing eternal spirit, standing tall in this space.” — Design Team.
While this is a temporary installation, it stands out for two key reasons: first, the design team behind this installation is the same as that of the "Anaya Coastal Trilogy." Second, the content creation for this installation involves a hybrid model, where participants who registered online collaborated with residents and visitors from the Anaya community to contribute to the project.
The New Wish Lighthouse was designed through a public voting process by community residents, culminating in two months of design and construction, officially opening on December 31, 2022, to welcome the first light of 2023. The installation's original intent was to connect people around the world with their hopes and aspirations for the New Year. To achieve this, the "New Wish Lighthouse Co-Creation Plan" was launched to collect creative sketches from online participants, which were then selected and reinterpreted locally. The project combined these sketches with those created on-site by local residents and visitors, resulting in a collective exhibition showcasing 204 artworks representing New Year wishes.
Standing at 12 meters tall, the installation is constructed from a steel frame and polycarbonate panels (PC panels), with an 8 cm thick solid steel plate serving as a foundation weight. The PC panels offer high levels of customization in color, transparency, treatment, profile, size, and connection systems. Coupled with the excellent weather resistance and light transmission of acrylic paint, the installation achieves a striking visual effect. Each layer of panels is slightly tilted at a 5° angle toward the ground, allowing visitors at the base of the lighthouse to easily appreciate the artworks above.
The structure presents distinctly different aesthetics during the day and night. By day, the translucent white lighthouse stands humbly by the sea, while at night, it illuminates 204 vibrant artworks, creating a festive atmosphere that encapsulates New Year wishes. This glowing beacon calls upon people to make wishes and embrace a brighter future.
As a temporary installation, the design team prioritized sustainability from the outset, carefully selecting the site and materials to ensure environmental responsibility. When the lighthouse is dismantled and recycled, the main steel structure will be salvaged, while the 204 artwork panels will be sent as gifts to those who participated in the "Co-Creation Project." Unlike other temporary installations that may involve commercial partnerships, the New Year Lighthouse represents a beautiful and innovative endeavor that fosters community engagement and creativity.
16、One-Way Space Bookstore
Design Team: B.L.U.E. Architecture Studio
Building Area: 590 m²
Completion Year: 2018
“The imagination of space in design initially stems from the concept of 'loneliness.' When individuals escape the hustle and bustle of the city and find themselves by the sea, that sense of solitude is amplified. Unlike traditional bookstores, the design aims to create an interactive space centered around the individual.” — Design Team.
The interior space, originally a long rectangular layout, is divided into several small box-like areas that enhance the pathways and visual interest, creating a lively and rhythmic atmosphere. This design includes a spacious entrance hall for gatherings and a secluded area for personal immersion at the far end. The use of simple materials like steel and terrazzo continues the natural and tranquil tone of the space.
Through the clever design of these “boxes,” each one offers its own unique charm. Interspersed within these boxes are reading nooks that not only provide a place for rest and reading but also foster shared experiences. Some reading areas are even designed for groups, yet the design cleverly increases the sense of personal space as one moves inward. This arrangement allows for an intimate retreat, offering a “small box” for solitude and an opportunity for deep reflection.
The One-Way Space Bookstore explores the multifaceted nature of "solitude," with its design of spaces and atmosphere enabling individuals to enjoy a serene solitude while also fostering moments of resonance and connection with others.
17、Y Sea Restaurant
Design Team: Vector Architects
Floor Area: 713 m²
Completion Year: 2018
"Unlike the role of being 'gazed upon' in a library, the sea here serves as a backdrop, allowing diners to glance towards the ocean and inadvertently witness the happenings beyond." — Design Team
As the third project in the Aranya seaside series following the Solitude Library and Seaside Auditorium, Y Sea Restaurant is situated adjacent to the library. This design culminates the trilogy, employing the concept of "concealment" to establish a dynamic interaction with the library.
The restaurant is enveloped by a grove of trees, creating a fluid boundary between the courtyard and the dining area that shifts seamlessly, lacking a fixed identity and remaining subtly hidden from view. This stands in stark contrast to the "solitude" experienced at the library by the sea, highlighting the close yet opposing nature of the two spaces.
The design fully opens the first floor of the building, eliminating a clear main entrance and integrating the landscape courtyard into the architecture through its undulating exterior contours. When the glass sliding doors are completely opened, the space transforms into a seamless indoor-outdoor dining environment, with the surrounding trees and the distant coastline filling the view. Sunlight and breeze flow in directly, fostering a profound physical and spiritual connection between nature and the individual in this moment.
The second floor serves as the restaurant's roof and a viewing platform overlooking the seaside, where visitors can clearly see the library and the New Year Lighthouse. The arranged seating offers a place to relax during quieter times, and when the weather is pleasant, it transforms into a rooftop dining area. Multiple staircases connecting the front and back courtyards to the rooftop platform add a sense of intrigue to each vantage point, creating an atmosphere that is both inviting and relaxed.
The building is supported by a system of exposed concrete walls and steel columns. The 120mm-diameter steel columns supporting the eaves create a sense of openness, with their cross-section dimensions harmonizing with the surrounding landscape trees. The use of a grid beam structure minimizes the presence of structural walls, enhancing the flexibility and freedom of the floor plan. The building's height is strategically designed to control excessive lateral direct sunlight, achieving an interior atmosphere where the grid beams appear to float like "clouds" in the space.
The seaside restaurant Y Sea positions the relationship between nature and humanity as the focal point of its design. Rather than pursuing eye-catching architectural forms, it embraces a seamless integration with the environment, emphasizing a design approach that blends into its surroundings. This invites patrons to reflect on what truly deserves their attention and contemplation—the essence of their lived experiences.
18、Taste from Mountain and Sea Dessert Shop
Design Team: B.L.U.E. Architecture Studio
Building Area: 170 m²
Completion Year: 2021
"In today's architectural landscape, we believe there is a need for irrational qualities to emphasize the value of emotion. Space is not merely a container for living and activities; it is a vessel for emotions and memories. The experiential and spiritual aspects of architecture have become the core of our design philosophy." — Design Team
Nestled beside a cinema, this project occupies a prime position on one side of the commercial town square, offering expansive views and a direct connection to the main road. It marks one of the most straightforward design expressions within the Anaya community, stepping away from the strict standards of modern architectural functionalism to create a unique indoor atmosphere. The design team aimed to evoke a sense of warmth and intimacy, inviting visitors to linger and savor not just the desserts, but the entire experience.
The massive rock serves as the sole entity within the space, defining the facade and the interior areas. Expansive floor-to-ceiling glass maximizes external views without disrupting the visual intention created by the rock. Crafted from GRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete), the rock design conceals the underlying steel columns while offering a rich texture. The rugged, natural surface contrasts beautifully with the ultra-clear glass, creating a play of solidity and lightness that enhances the overall atmosphere with a palpable sense of strength.
The design team eschewed digital modeling in favor of exploring various scales of handcrafted models throughout the design process. They meticulously crafted foam models at scales of 1:100, 1:30, 1:10, and 1:1, alongside hand-sculpted clay models, making adjustments until arriving at the final design. This hands-on approach culminated in the creation of a unique, naturalistic rock formation, constructed on-site through handcrafted casting and assembly. This method not only resulted in a one-of-a-kind piece but also embodied the rustic, humanistic spirit of artisanal craftsmanship.
Located by the sea and devoid of mountains, Aranya Park finds inspiration in the concept of "the essence of mountains and seas" through the design of the Weichong Mountain Sea dessert shop. Massive rock formations envelop those within, creating an immersive experience. Some private rooms are entirely enclosed by these rocks, with circular openings carved into the stone to allow natural light to filter through. The interplay of sunlight and shadows on the rock surfaces provides a serene atmosphere, allowing visitors to feel as though they are resting among the stones, reconnecting with nature.
The architectural space of the Weichong Mountain Sea dessert shop stands out in Anaya, exuding a unique atmosphere reminiscent of Zion in The Matrix, where a futuristic society ultimately returns to a primitive natural state. This space embodies a spirit of reconnection with nature and humanity, transforming into a sanctuary for spiritual renewal. The interplay of natural materials and thoughtful design creates a serene environment that invites visitors to reflect and embrace their surroundings, fostering a deep sense of tranquility and belonging.
19、 YINLU Hotel
Design Team: Plat Asia Design Office
Area: 20,000 m²
Completion: 2023
"Design adheres to the delicate perception of light and the vitality of nature inherent in Eastern aesthetics, considering the sustainability of spatial lifecycles." — Design Team
Opened in 2023, the YINLU Hotel is the latest addition to the Aranya complex, situated in the eighth phase of the development. Nestled away from the bustling seaside, it stands adjacent to the more established phases one through seven, requiring a short drive or shuttle bus ride to reach.
The hotel is a five-story wing-shaped structure that fosters a tranquil ambiance, benefiting from its location in a new, independent area. The overall design embodies a rich modern Eastern aesthetic, featuring 180 guest rooms equipped with private hot springs, alongside a multifunctional lobby, an all-day dining restaurant, banquet halls, a spa therapy center, and meditation rooms.
YINLU Hotel is not just a place to stay; it is a serene retreat that encourages guests to reconnect with nature while enjoying the comforts of contemporary design.
The YINLU Hotel embraces a resort philosophy inspired by traditional Japanese ryokans, renowned for their famous "one night, two meals" culture, which is beloved by many visitors. The hotel's rooms prominently feature spacious hot spring pools, with courtyard suites offering private indoor and outdoor bathing areas. This design aligns perfectly with the hotel's unique positioning within the Aranya area, creating a tranquil escape that enhances the overall guest experience.
The interior space is designed with a palette of natural wood tones, complemented by blank, unadorned walls and a variety of bonsai arrangements that create a rich atmosphere of Eastern aesthetics. This pure and minimalist design exudes a deep sense of Zen, inviting guests to immerse themselves in tranquility and harmony.
Due to its location in a secluded area, away from the more developed facilities, the hotel currently experiences low foot traffic. However, this serves to enhance its tranquil and self-contained atmosphere. In the future, once the adjacent "Cloud Center" is completed, this location is expected to become a new focal point of attention.
20、NO. Fourth Canteen
Design Team: 建言建筑 / 明懿空间设计
Building Area: 2807 m²
Completion Year: 2019
"The canteen serves as a vital element in community building, where a quality spatial experience enhances residents' sense of belonging. While fulfilling basic life needs, the canteen also enriches the community living experience." — Design Team
The canteen in Aranya has always been one of its distinctive features, with each residential area having its own dedicated canteen. Unlike most canteens that are attached to other buildings, the Fourth Canteen has been uniquely designed and constructed as a standalone facility, complete with a rich outdoor environment.
The architecture and interior design of the Anaya Fourth Canteen are dominated by a minimalist white color palette, complemented by natural wood walls and ceiling designs that create a clean and modern aesthetic. The interior space is simply divided, with large floor-to-ceiling windows that open up the seating area to the outdoor landscape. An entire row of dining tables is also reserved outdoors, corresponding to the indoor arrangement. Aside from the partition walls separating the kitchen and dining area, there are no other barriers obstructing the line of sight, even in the VIP dining area, which is simply divided by seating arrangements.
The entrance features a gentle ramp for an excellent barrier-free design experience, along with a temporary pet-friendly space. The entire building is single-story, with circulation unfolding along the long sides of the structure, effectively avoiding conflicts in indoor traffic flow. The circulation design incorporates handwashing stations, food pickup areas, dining selections, and multiple checkout exits, maintaining adequate spacing between different zones. This directional layout allows for an efficient flow of people, guided by clear signage in a white background with black text, making navigation intuitive and easy to follow. Simultaneously, the staff’s warm service and guidance contribute to a very comfortable dining atmosphere.
The materials chosen for the entire project include terrazzo, steel mesh, stone-plastic composite panels, back-painted glass, and stainless steel, all designed to withstand the coastal climate. The geometric design elements create a sense of order and unity within the space. Numerous indoor planters and landscape designs contribute to a more vibrant atmosphere, helping to appropriately regulate the indoor environment.
While each Anaya canteen has its own unique style—often aligned with the design aesthetics of associated projects—they all contribute to Anaya's distinctive brand appeal through their environment, ambiance, value for money, service quality, dining options, and overall comfort.
21、Future Developments
As the southern district of Anaya continues to grow, several upcoming facilities are nearing completion, such as the “Cloud Center” currently under construction in Phase Eight. Simultaneously, new buildings and amenities are being planned for Anaya’s northern shore. This includes the recently opened Northern Shore Saint Sound Hall (which will be further reviewed following this investigation) and future additions to the northern community, such as the Northern Shore Market, Wind Warehouse Yacht Base, Sports Center, Soho Art District, and Graybox Art Center.
Project Summary
Aranya is fundamentally a community—a successful real estate project that operates under a unique commercial logic and distinct characteristics. It is heartening to see a diverse array of talented design teams converge here, thoughtfully considering the interplay of humanity, nature, and the environment in every aspect of the community's development. The end result is not a haphazard display of wealth or a self-indulgent exhibition of style; instead, Anaya transcends its coastal origins.
It extends the essence of nature through a variety of lifestyle activities while enveloping daily life in cultural and aesthetic experiences. Prior to its exceptional operations and promotional efforts, Aranya, along with its meticulously selected design teams, has collaboratively crafted and expanded this new frontier, achieving mutual success while leaving visitors in awe.
