Sarzeau Winery Construction
Carmen Maurice Architecture

Carmen Maurice Architecture

Feature:

Project - In a bold reimagining of rural architecture, Carmen Maurice Architecture has transformed a historic mill in Sarzeau, France, into a striking winery that seamlessly blends industrial functionality with artisanal charm. The project, completed in 2024, masterfully addresses the challenge of limited space by wrapping a semi-buried circular structure around the renovated mill.

The 496-square-meter complex serves as both a working winery and a cultural hub, embodying the duality of wine production – a process of quiet maturation and convivial sharing. This concept is reflected in the building's contrasting facades: a protective eastern wall that forms a new "base" for the mill, and an inviting western side that opens up to the landscape with two wing-like extensions.

Perhaps the most innovative aspect of the design is its harmonious integration with the surrounding vineyards. The winery's circular form radiates from the central mill, which stands like a lighthouse amidst the 6-hectare vineyard. The semi-buried structure not only minimizes visual impact but also cleverly utilizes the earth's thermal inertia to benefit the cellar.

Materiality plays a crucial role in the project's aesthetic. While the interior embraces an industrial look with exposed brick and concrete, the exterior features a bespoke plaster containing shells – a nod to the site's coastal proximity. This juxtaposition of raw functionality and crafted artistry encapsulates the essence of modern winemaking, creating a space that is both productive and poetic.
