Nujiang River 72 Canyon Scenic Area
Archermit

Project:Nujiang River 72 Canyon Scenic Area

Team:Archermit

Size:800㎡

Location: Chamdo, Tibet

Feature:

Project - Archermit has unveiled a dramatic cantilevered glass viewing platform that hovers over Tibet's Nujiang Canyon, offering visitors a heart-stopping perspective of one of China's most spectacular landscapes. The Nujiang River 72 Canyon Scenic Area transforms the legendary hairpin turns of the G318 Sichuan-Tibet Highway into an immersive architectural experience.

Located in Chamdo, Tibet, the project's centerpiece is a remarkable steel structure that projects 37 meters into thin air, suspended 130 meters above the canyon floor. The viewing platform's design ingeniously references the infamous '72 Turns' of the highway below, reimagining the thrilling driving experience as a pedestrian adventure through transparent glass floors.

The installation is clad in weather-resistant steel plates finished in Tibetan red, creating a bold contrast against the rugged mountain terrain while paying homage to the region's cultural heritage. This material choice not only ensures durability in the extreme high-altitude environment but also establishes a dialogue with the surrounding landscape through its raw, textural qualities.

Beyond the main platform, the complex incorporates a series of challenging features including a zipline across the canyon and a "Thrilling Steps Challenge Bridge," all inspired by the original construction methods of the G318 Highway. The facility is complemented by practical amenities including a cliffside restaurant, coffee bar, and supermarket, seamlessly integrating commercial spaces into the mountainous setting.

This architectural intervention represents a new typology of extreme tourism infrastructure, encouraging visitors to step out of their vehicles and physically engage with Tibet's dramatic topography, transforming the traditional sightseeing experience into an adrenaline-fueled exploration of one of China's most iconic landscapes.

Design Team - Founded in April 2015 in Chengdu, China, Archermit (小隐建筑) has emerged as a pioneering force in contemporary Chinese architecture, distinguished by its groundbreaking Imagist Architectural Theory. Under the leadership of Principal Architect Youcai Pan, Design Director Zhe Yang, and Technical Director Ren Zhen Chen, the practice has established itself as a vanguard of architectural poetics in the region.

The studio's philosophical foundation rests on the ancient Chinese concept of "以意赋象,以象见意" (Endowing forms with Ideas, perceiving Ideas through forms), manifesting in a unique design methodology that synthesizes Eastern philosophical contemplation with contemporary spatial narratives. This approach transcends conventional architectural practice by creating what the firm terms "scenario-based existences" - spaces that bridge reality and imagination through carefully choreographed architectural sequences.

Archermit's portfolio demonstrates a masterful balance between phenomenological experience and pragmatic functionality, evident in projects like the recently completed Nujiang River 72 Canyon Scenic Area. Their work is characterized by strong experiential qualities and cultural resonance, achieved through the extraction and transformation of natural and cultural imagery into architectural elements.

The practice has garnered international recognition for its innovative interpretation of Chinese spatial aesthetics, accumulating numerous prestigious awards. Their design philosophy, which they term "Hidden Architectural Language," represents a significant contribution to contemporary architectural discourse, offering a fresh paradigm for integrating traditional Eastern spatial concepts with modern architectural expression.
