Kronaus Mitterer Architekten

Kronaus Mitterer Architekten

Feature:

Project - Austrian architecture firm Kronaus Mitterer Architekten has completed a striking educational campus in Vienna's Floridsdorf district that reimagines the traditional school typology through an innovative "checkerboard" spatial concept and ambitious sustainability features.

The Willi Resetarits Educational Campus, named after the renowned Viennese singer, brings together multiple educational facilities – including kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, music school and youth center – within a single 15,000-square-metre hybrid timber-concrete structure.

The building's distinctive facade reflects its internal organization, with educational spaces and multi-functional zones arranged in an alternating grid pattern that creates what the architects describe as a "chess-like" composition. This systematic shifting of volumes across four floors generates a dynamic exterior presence while enabling flexible interconnections between learning spaces inside.

"The robust basic grid allows the rooms to be staggered floor by floor, giving the educational building a strong characteristic and its own identity," explain the architects. The design emphasizes connection to the outdoors through extensive terracing and integrated greenery, with intensively planted facades and accessible roof gardens helping to combat the urban heat island effect.

Sustainability drives both the aesthetic and technical solutions, combining solid wood construction with advanced systems including photovoltaics, groundwater utilization, and rainwater management. The facade even incorporates nesting boxes for local wildlife, demonstrating how educational architecture can actively contribute to urban biodiversity.
