Nestled in the historic Sannomaru area of Matsumoto, Japan, the new Matsumoto City Museum by KUME SEKKEI Co. stands as a testament to thoughtful urban regeneration and cultural preservation. This 7774-square-meter structure, completed in 2022, seamlessly blends contemporary design with deep-rooted local traditions.

The museum's most striking feature is its innovative roof structure - a folded-plate design crafted from 6mm steel plates spanning an impressive 18 meters. This engineering marvel maximizes exhibition space within the 18-meter height limit and pays homage to the majestic Northern Alps and the intricate patterns of Matsumoto Temari, a traditional local craft.

KUME SEKKEI's design brilliantly navigates the challenge of integrating a modern facility into a historically significant area. The building's eastern facade, facing Daimyo-cho Street, features a lowered roofline that elegantly transitions into the surrounding urban fabric. Along Dotekoji Street, an innovative "window gallery" serves as a dynamic interface between the museum and the city, constantly showcasing Matsumoto's vibrant culture.

Inside, a thoughtfully designed circulation path echoes the distinctive "Masugata" shape of the castle entrance, creating a narrative journey through the museum's spaces. This architectural promenade, beginning with grand stairs and winding through open voids, offers visitors a multi-layered experience that resonates with Matsumoto's mountain city character.
