KPMB Architects

KPMB Architects

面积:32052 m²

地点:Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Feature:

Project - KPMB Architects has unveiled a striking landmark for Boston University that redefines sustainable design in higher education. The Center for Computing & Data Sciences, a 19-storey vertical campus, rises boldly along the Charles River, transforming the city's skyline with its playful, stacked volumes.

Spanning 345,000 square feet, this avant-garde structure is Boston's largest operational fossil fuel-free building. Its sustainability credentials are impressive: a geothermal system provides heating and cooling, while a high-performance envelope with external shading devices minimizes energy consumption. The building targets LEED Platinum certification and aligns with Boston University's ambitious 2040 carbon neutrality goal.

The center's most distinctive feature is its dynamic form, often likened to a "stack of books" or a game of "Jenga". A transparent four-storey podium acts as an urban porch, fostering connectivity between the campus, river, and city. Inside, a central atrium and cascading staircase weave through the floors, encouraging serendipitous encounters among the 3,000 students and faculty from mathematics, statistics, and computer science departments.

Human-centered design takes center stage, with green roofs and terraces offering expansive city views and connecting occupants to nature. The interior spaces prioritize collaboration and innovation, reflecting the university's commitment to leadership in computing and data sciences.

KPMB's creation stands as a beacon of environmental and social sustainability, setting a new standard for academic architecture that is both remarkable and responsible.
