Project Name: Children's Hospital Zurich

Location: Zurich, Switzerland

Design Team: Herzog & de Meuron

Area: 96316 m²

Year: 2024

Feature:

Project - Herzog & de Meuron's University Children's Hospital in Zurich reimagines healthcare architecture, blending innovative design with a focus on patient well-being. The complex comprises two distinct buildings: a wood-clad acute-care facility and a cylindrical research center, unified by a lush landscape featuring over 250 trees.

The acute-care hospital, designed to function "like a town," boasts a unique layout with departments conceived as neighborhoods connected by "streets" and "squares." This approach enhances navigation and creates a more comforting environment for young patients. The building's facade, featuring warm wooden panels slotted into a concrete frame, offers a welcoming exterior that contrasts with traditional hospital aesthetics.

Inside, the design prioritizes natural light and spatial variety, with courtyards punctuating the main thoroughfare. The top floor houses 114 patient rooms, each designed as a "wooden cottage" to create a homely atmosphere. The adjacent cylindrical research facility maximizes views of the surrounding orchard while fostering collaboration among researchers through its central atrium design.

Sustainability is at the forefront, with both buildings achieving the Swiss Sustainable Building Council's platinum standard. The project exemplifies Herzog & de Meuron's belief that architecture can contribute to healing, offering a fresh perspective on healthcare design that prioritizes patient experience and environmental integration.
