Project:DoubleMint House

Team:large [medium] design office

Size:215 m²

Location:Toronto, Canada

Feature:

Project - In the heart of Toronto, a three-story Edwardian semi-detached home has been transformed into a masterpiece of contemporary design while respecting its historical roots. The doubleMint House, a project by [architect's name], seamlessly integrates a two-storey rear addition with the existing structure, creating a living space that is both functional and aesthetically striking.

The addition's focal point is the ingenious design of two nearly identical bedrooms on the second floor, cleverly tailored for twin brothers. These rooms, while mirroring each other in proportion and window placement, offer subtle individuality through uniquely sculpted ceilings and varying shades of blue paint. This thoughtful approach extends to a narrow double-height space at the end of the bedrooms, adding an element of architectural intrigue.

Perhaps the most unexpected feature is the third-storey walkout roof deck, an urban oasis that compensates for the ground-level green space sacrificed to the extension. This private retreat, enveloped by a thick guard rail that doubles as a privacy screen, has become a cherished spot for the homeowners to unwind and entertain.

The ground floor expansion aligns perfectly with the attached dwelling, housing an expansive dining and living area. A clever interplay of materials – including a western millwork piece showcasing books and vinyl, and an eastern composition of white oak panels and blackened steel – creates a seamless transition between old and new. The space is bathed in soft, indirect light from the north-facing window wall, which also facilitates natural ventilation.

DoubleMint House stands as a testament to innovative spatial design, where every element serves a dual purpose. From the light-channeling skylight to the multifunctional thick guard rail, this renovation proves that with creative thinking, even the most challenging spaces can be transformed into something extraordinary.
