Project - In Dongchen Township, Ningbo's Xiangshan County, Mur Mur Lab's Dongdan Grassland "Sea Ruins" Station redefines the possibilities of viewing architecture through its poetic architectural language. This 260-square-meter public building creates a unique space for dialogue with nature through two wave-topped glass pavilions. Situated at the edge of a nearly thousand-acre East China Sea prairie, backed by Dawanshan remnants and overlooking mudflat pastures, it serves as a vital hub connecting the southern coastal highway and the Damuyang coastal area.

The project's most striking feature is its unique sequential viewing design—the building is cleverly divided into two functional zones: a reception area with public restrooms near the road, and a light dining area hidden behind ginkgo trees. The two zones, connected through different elevations and connecting corridors, create a progressive viewing experience, transforming from initial screening to framed views, corridors, and finally to elevated platforms, offering entirely new perspectives of the unchanging landscape.

The building employs a steel structural system combined with full-height glass walls and wave-shaped metal roofs, creating a light and transparent spatial effect. Material selection demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship—beige exposed aggregate concrete contrasts with light blue terrazzo flooring, while Siberian larch wall cladding balances new construction traces with its mottled texture. The overall design, with its minimal color palette and restrained treatment, allows the architecture to become a serene backdrop for viewing the magnificent prairie landscape.

Design Team - MVRDV, established in 1993 by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs, and Nathalie de Vries, has grown into a globally influential architecture practice. The firm now operates with a dynamic team of over 300 professionals led by the founding partners alongside Frans de Witte, Fokke Moerel, Wenchian Shi, Jan Knikker, and Bertrand Schippan, with offices strategically located in Rotterdam, Shanghai, Paris, Berlin, and New York.

The practice is distinguished by its research-based design methodology, emphasizing early collaboration with clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary experts. Their dedicated in-house Climate Team ensures sustainability integration across all projects, while MVRDV NEXT specializes in computational design and technological innovation. This comprehensive approach has resulted in groundbreaking projects ranging from mixed-use developments to cultural institutions and urban masterplans.

The firm's portfolio showcases innovative architectural solutions across various scales and typologies, including the world-renowned Markthal in Rotterdam, the nature-inspired Valley in Amsterdam, and the groundbreaking Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen. Their work consistently demonstrates a commitment to sustainable urban development, social engagement, and technological advancement, earning numerous international awards and establishing MVRDV as a pioneer in contemporary architectural practice.
