博物馆最引人注目的特征是其山形轮廓，这一设计灵感来自两个重要的在地元素：北宋文学作品中备受推崇的蜀山，以及在当地延续使用超过六个世纪的传统龙窑。这种双重指涉创造出强有力的建筑叙事，将建筑牢固地锚定在宜兴的自然与文化景观之中。

建筑复杂的几何形态通过创新的倒扣壳式屋顶实现，其特征是由虚拟球体切割的表面，由精密的四层木格构架支撑。这一工程解决方案不仅确保了结构的完整性，还创造出一系列戏剧性的内部空间，引导参观者穿行于展览之中。

外立面由与当地工匠密切合作开发，采用定制陶板配以变化的釉面工艺，创造出微妙的色彩渐变。这些面板会随光线变化产生动态视觉效果，映射出陶瓷烧制过程中的转化本质。建筑形体经过策略性的开窗处理，与周边环境建立有意义的联系，创造出通向相邻陶瓷工厂和运河的视觉通廊。外立面陶板温暖而略带质感的物质性，让人联想起传统中国茶器，将建筑表皮转化为一件大型陶器，承载并颂扬其所代表的工艺。

Project - Japanese architect Kengo Kuma has unveiled a sculptural ceramics museum in Yixing, China, featuring an undulating form clad in hand-glazed terracotta panels that pays homage to the region's millennium-old pottery tradition.

The UCCA Clay Museum, completed in 2024, emerges from its post-industrial context as a contemporary interpretation of both the local landscape and architectural vernacular. Situated on the former grounds of traditional pottery factories, the 3,437-square-metre structure serves as a cultural bridge between Yixing's rich ceramic heritage and its future as a hub for artistic innovation.

The museum's most striking feature is its mountain-like silhouette, which draws inspiration from two significant local references: the historic Shushan Mountain, celebrated in Northern Song dynasty literature, and the traditional "dragon kilns" that have fired pottery in the region for over six centuries. This dual reference creates a powerful architectural narrative that anchors the building in both the physical and cultural landscape of Yixing.

The structure's complex geometry is achieved through an innovative inverted shell roof, characterized by virtual sphere-carved surfaces supported by a sophisticated four-layer wooden lattice beam system. This engineering solution not only provides structural integrity but also creates a series of dramatic interior spaces that guide visitors through the museum's exhibitions.

Developed in close collaboration with local artisans, the exterior is composed of custom-made ceramic panels featuring varied glazing techniques that create subtle color gradations. These panels respond dynamically to changing light conditions, producing an ever-shifting visual experience that mirrors the transformative nature of the ceramic firing process.

The building's form is strategically punctured to establish meaningful connections with its surroundings, creating sight lines and physical links to the adjacent pottery factory and canal. The materiality of the facade panels – warm and slightly textured – offers a tactile experience reminiscent of traditional Chinese tea ware, transforming the building envelope into a large-scale ceramic vessel that houses and celebrates the very craft it represents.
