Project - In the heart of Vancouver, a groundbreaking educational facility has emerged, setting a new standard for sustainable and child-centric design. The wək̓ʷan̓əs tə syaqʷəm Elementary School, designed by hcma architecture + design, is a beacon of innovation in school architecture, seamlessly blending cutting-edge construction techniques with a nurturing learning environment.

At the core of this CDN $22.4 million project is its pioneering use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels, marking it as Vancouver School Board's first school constructed entirely from this sustainable material. This bold choice not only significantly reduces the building's carbon footprint but also creates a serene, inspiring atmosphere for its 340 young occupants.

The school's 3,385 square meter footprint is ingeniously divided into four volumes, connected by a central atrium. This cruciform layout breaks down the institutional scale, offering students relatable, comfortable spaces that encourage both focus and collaboration. Large, folding glass partitions blur the lines between classrooms and shared areas, fostering a fluid, adaptable learning experience.
